Description

When I think about rendering, the first picture that comes to mind is one of bacon. When you render fat from bacon, you cook it until all the excess, the fat, is removed. Another picture that comes to mind is that of actors and actresses performing great works of prose. Merriam-Webster (2004) offers two definitions that are important to understand the ideas and concepts presented here. First, "to melt down," and second, "to give a performance." Text rendering gives students a way to break down text and get at the authentic meaning--the good stuff! More specifically, text rendering is a process that allows students to create an understanding of text, without having meaning given or handed down to them by teachers, administrators, book companies, or society (Lytle & Botel, 1990). I first used text rendering in a book club setting with 10 African American 8th-grade students. We were reading Letters From a Slave Girl: The Story of Harriet Jacobs by Mary Lyons (1996). Each girl had just completed reading her paragraph and was waiting to read her sentence. After some girls completed reading their sentence, they would utter a quiet "yes," give a nod of the head and then an "umm-huu." As they continued to read their sentences, then their phrases and finally their words, I noticed the listeners' body languages began to change. They were listening intently and waiting excitedly to share their excerpts. These affirmations signaled to me that the girls shared the same meaning of the text as the reader; text rendering was a success!
